GETTING ALL THE PARTIES GATHERED in the parlor took another twenty minutes. The anger permeating from every corner—we made sure to keep them separated—was almost oppressive, as if I could feel the hatred wafting off the women, and it felt very different than I expected.

“So if I understand this correctly, you married Owen Sandusky seventeen years ago,” Landon told Amelia. He had his calm FBI face on and showed zero signs that he was enjoying himself. That was a good thing.

“Almost eighteen.” Amelia was the calmest of the wives, which made sense because that’s who she was. She crossed her arms over her chest, sat next to Savannah with feigned disinterest, and proceeded to ignore anyone not in law enforcement.

“I was Owen’s wife,” Meghan replied. “He was my soul mate.”

“Not legally,” Landon shot back. He clearly didn’t find Meghan’s Bohemian flare nearly as entertaining as I did. “You married Owen five years ago, correct?”

“Yes.” Meghan bobbed her head. “It was love at first sight.”

“How did you meet?” I asked, my curiosity getting the better of me.

“It was at a Save the Planet rally in Traverse City,” Meghan explained. “I was picketing in front of the courthouse, and he stopped to talk to me. He said he saw me from across the road and had to come over because he was certain our hearts connected from afar.”

Amelia let loose a derisive snort. “And you fell for that? Good grief. Owen used that same line when we were in college, and he wanted to pick up a bra-less buffoon on Earth Day.”

I slid my eyes to her. “Were you and Owen together in college?” I asked.

She shook her head. “We didn’t hook up until right before graduation. I knew better. He fancied himself a ladies’ man… even though he had the game of a fourteen-year-old boy who only watches porn for inspiration. I knew he was going to make good money and likely age well. It seemed like a good match once he was done sowing his wild oats and ready to grow up.”

“How romantic,” I drawled, earning a quelling look from Hunter. I immediately straightened and pretended I wasn’t judging her even though I was. I couldn’t help myself.

“How long did you date before getting married?” Hunter asked Meghan.

“Oh, our love was instantaneous,” Meghan insisted. “We were married within two weeks.”

“And you signed a marriage license?” Hunter pressed.

“Yes.” Anger wrinkled Meghan’s forehead. “Don’t be ridiculous. I signed it, and he filed it.”

“Was it an official marriage license, though?” Hunter pressed. “They would’ve done their due diligence and checked before issuing a marriage license.”

“I… don’t… know.” Frustration was practically oozing from Meghan’s pores. “I left that stuff to him.”

“There’s no way it was a legit marriage license,” Landon told Hunter. “It would’ve set off all sorts of alarm bells.”

“Right.” Hunter bobbed his head then shifted his attention to Naomi. “And how long have you and Owen been married?”

“Nine beautiful months,” Naomi replied. “He was the love of my life. I don’t know what I’m going to do without him.
